Dr. John E. McCarthy, 55,  was driving his mother-in-law Helen Weah, 70, in a 2018 Hyundai Electra traveling southbound from Ohio when they crossed over the grassy median for an unknown reason striking a 2018 Subaru Outback near mile marker 90 along the interstate in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, according to the release by state police and the family.

The Kane family from North Carolina was in the Outback— Emily, 81, who was driving her husband Bernard, 86, and daughter Elizabeth, 55— all were hurt and taken to Hershey Medical Center, according to social media posts and the police release. The extent of their injuries is unknown.

McCarthy and Weah died at the scene, the release details.

All five people involved were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the crash, which happened around 10:25 a.m. although the road remained closed for approximately 10 miles— between Exit 90: PA 72 - LEBANON and Exit 100: PA 443 - PINE GROVE— through the afternoon, police say.

McCarthy and Weah are survived by his wife (her daughter) and their three children (her grandchildren), his sister-in-law (her other daughter), as well as countless friends and family in America and Liberia.

Friends and members of their family have spoken to Daily Voice and say they will never forget playing at Weah's home in Liberia or how years later she still reached out and check up on them. Both McCarthy and Weah are remembered as devout Christians with kind hearts.

Funeral and memorial service details have not been released.

Police continue to investigate the crash.
